In general, The Legend of Zelda usually takes place in a Western- European like kingdom called Hyrule, despite different games of the franchise taking place in other places but in general, Hyrule is the main kingdom that the games take place in. The main protagonist is mainly a male character named Link, who is assigned a certain task in saving someone or a certain place exclusing some side games such as Hyrule Warriors. In The Legend of Zelda, there are items and upgrades the player experiences in order to get stronger as Link and be able to progress the different storylines.
The first game of the Legend of Zelda was released on the Famicon Disk System in 1986 where Nintendo managed to bring the game over to the Nintendo NES in America. It was developed by the creators of Mario, Shigeru Miyamoto, Takashi Tezuka, and Kazuaki Morita where Koji Kondo worked on the soundtrack for the Legend of Zelda franchise. In the development of the first Zelda game, Miyamoto wanted players to focus on completing the game, not getting a high score like in Mario. The game had encouraged a new type of communication between players, eventually inspiring another game franchise: Animal Crossing.

Throughout the many games that have been released for the Legend of Zelda franchise, there have been many features that are either exclusive to a certain game or modify features and causes huge changes in the concept of the game. Other than the obvious upgrade in graphics design for the world and characters, there have been many items introduced that have been created to serve a certain purpose. Many Legend of Zelda games have been created with the sole purpose of improving the gaming experience for the player and to provide a challenge as well. However, there have been some instances where some favorite features are removed due to either developers wanting to make changes within their games or that the features could possibly be abused. Despite all that, The Legend of Zelda, by far has to be one of Nintendo's most successful game in terms of being able to implement features that their fans will enjoy.
